Also, if you have had something printed that has your email address on it or have your email address on a publicly accessible web page, there is a chance that some spammers have obtained your email address in this way.
What can be done stop it?
¨ When you receive spam, delete it. Don’t use the “unsubscribe” option or respond directly to spam emails. The spammers will know they have an active email address and you’ll end up with more junk messages. ¨ Think twice before forwarding what could be unwanted email to others. ¨ Unless you have read and agreed to their privacy policy, do not give your email address to any Web sites. ¨ Use a reliable spam filter. Many Internet Security suites have a built in spam blocker. If you get large amounts of spam regularly, change your email address or contact your Internet Service Provider. (ISP). Keep your email address as private as possible. If you enter your email address on any form on the Internet it exposes you to possibly receiving unwanted emails or having your name sold. Be sure to read these carefully before filling out. Look for an "opt out" box you can mark or unmark which will allow or prevent you from receiving additional information from that company.
Updates These are very important, especially for security software and operating systems such as Windows. Not everyone downloads and installs updates regularly, regarding them as a nuisance or perhaps not knowing exactly what they are. New viruses are developed every day and security software has to be updated to keep up with the threats. Microsoft issues service packs and bug fixes regularly to maintain Windows and other programs.
Security program renewals Very important, these differ from updates. This is where the computer user should renew their anti-virus/security software. When the licence has expired, the user is open to threats from new spyware and malware.
Turning off your computer Always turn off by going to Start and shutting down. If the computer hangs and won't respond it can be shut down by pressing the power button for about 10 seconds.
